Howie Lau

Recently having joined IMDA in September 2018, Graduate of 1993 Howie Lau has racked up a variety of experience and expertise in his career. He has worked for Lenovo and IBM and was CMO and Head of Consumer Business at StarHub.

Through these companies, Howie has had experience in sales, consulting, outsourcing, project management, marketing, and M&M. During his time at NUS, internships were rare, but Howie was able to get one at IBM where he was in charge of indexing books on health information systems. This was done via a mainframe computer terminal and the editing style was very similar to HTML codes as word processing software was not available. Other than this internship, he has taken on various part time jobs during school breaks for extra income. Some of these included selling magazine subscriptions and packing hampers.

When Howie graduated, he was in a hurry to succeed and do well. His father had just retired and he was now the sole breadwinner in the family. He was willing to put in extra hours and be bolder with decisions and taking risks. After being told it would take at least 5 years to promoted to a first line manager, Howie set a goal for himself and was determined to do it even quicker. He was able to get promoted within 3.5 years and credits advice from his mentors, stretching to achieve targets, and a healthy dose of luck.
