Meet Our Alumni
After coming from a science-focused background, 2016 Graduate, Joel Goh, wanted to keep his doors open to various career paths so he chose business. He now is a Senior Consultant at Maersk Management Consulting.
Joel did an investment banking internship during his time at university, but ultimately decided to switch to consulting because he wanted to add greater direct value to companies, while providing a better work-life balance. The international case competition experience also opened Joel’s eyes to a possible career within consulting. During his time at NUS, Joel joined Singapore Economic Development Board as a Project Officer in the Energy and Chemicals Cluster. This played a significant role in helping his team to victory in the NUS-Shell Business Case Competition. After numerous competitions, he better understood the nature of work that consultants do and could make a more informed decision about his career.
One of the biggest takeaways from Joel’s university experience was the importance of mentorship. He was a part of the Bizad Leadership Development Programme (BLDP) and during this experience he was linked up to then Director in Microsoft, Maurice as his mentor. He was able to learn a lot from him through candid conversations about work and life. Another takeaway from Joel was his personal development outside of work/study. During his second year, he got a role as a business development intern in a small private company in India, through the AIESEC programme. He was able to live and work overseas and ultimately the experience strengthened his resilience and adaptability.
