Thio Boon Kiat
Passion and interest and realising the importance of both is what led Thio Boon Kiat to pursue a career in business analytics. He graduated in 2017 and now works as an Assistant Manager in the Group Risk Management division of OCBC Bank.
Boon Kiat joined OCBC after graduating as part of their Youth Bankers Programme. During his time at NUS he participated in marketing, business analytics, and banking internships. He ultimately chose business analytics, which was a relatively new area, but he saw a future in analytics. Boon Kiat’s first internship was in marketing, but he realised he wanted to pursue an area where he could leverage on data to create an impact for people, clients, or internal stakeholders.
The OCBC Young Bankers Programme that Boon Kiat participated in is a one-year rotational programme for fresh graduates looking to gain exposure to the banking industry. He was attached to the Group Risk Management division, and joined the Group Portfolio Analytics & Reporting department, whose function is to analyse credit risk data and build credit models for the bank. He was exposed to various job roles, which helped him understand his own job function better. Not only was it beneficial through what he learned, but he had various opportunities to engage closely with stakeholders and senior management. This experience provided valuable opportunities for him to collaborate and learn from the other management associates. Despite the good things, there were also challenges Boon Kiat faced when starting his first job. Specifically, learning a new programming language and dealing with new stakeholders.
