Morning Walk with BSA Presidents

It was such an honour to be walking with our current BSA President Chua Hung Meng, three past Presidents Peter Tay, Sonny Yuen, Tan Boon Chin, and first President’s First Lady Kong Yuet Peng on the Saturday morning of 27 November 2021. The sun shone brightly above us as we walked energetically in three groups of 4-5pax and adhered to all the safe distancing rules. The 7km route took us around the scenic Labrador Park, Keppel Bay and Keppel Island areas.

The day was made even more special as six BSA Charity Run (BCR) student committee members joined in to prep potential routes for their 12th BCR in Jan 2022 - From Left: Ke En, Justine, Louis, Shi Hui, Fung Seng and Xin Li.

I am sure you must know that BCR is one of BSA’s proudest annual events, which brings in hundreds of runners from all walks of life every year for a worthy cause. This year, funds and donations collected will go towards the NUSBSA Bursary fund to support financially challenged students and beneficiaries of TOUCH Community Services, Elder Care.

The 7km Walking Route:

Dragon’s Teeth Gate - We were told that this large stone formation is used as a marker for Cheng Ho and his ships in navigating sea routes, but they were blasted away in 1848 to allow easier passage into Keppel Harbour. So, what we saw was just a remake, but it’s certainly worth a picture opportunity.

Bukit Chermin Boardwalk - A 330m boardwalk built in 2012 to link Labrador Park to Keppel Bay. I love walking here during high tide, and it takes you to the foothill of conserved colonial bungalows and the iconic Reflections condo - old and new all in one!

Keppel Island - Previously called Pulau Hantu (Ghost Island) in Malay. The island is now linked to the mainland via a 250m long Keppel Bay Bridge and houses high-end restaurants and a marina for yachts.

Berlayer Creek - This is a mangrove trail that runs adjacent to Labrador Nature Reserve. If you are patient and attentive, you may find birds and raptors and hear the sounds of crickets and cicadas.

Labrador Battery - One of the 11 coastal artillery forts built by the British, called Fort Pasir Panjang then. Today you can see man-made statues at the gun emplacement outfitted with cannons and guns - another good photo opportunity!

This walk is the Walking Interest Group’s last walk of the year for 2021. We hope you have enjoyed yourselves, and we will see everyone again next year - starting with our end February walk on Saturday 26 February 2022, “Quarry Escapades”!

There is no separate BSA walk for January as that is our BCR month, and we hope everyone will join it, enjoy yourselves and run for a good cause! I have joined both the Team and Individual events - a bit kiasu, I know, but why not, when I can enjoy my walks and at the same time help someone in need.
